Shakeil Boothe moved to Brampton to live with his father and stepmother in search of a better life was kept chained to his bed, beaten and starved in the months leading up to his death. On May 27, 2011, Shakeil was found in his home, without any signs of life, he would be dead not too long after that. Shakeil’s death was caused by a combination of blunt force injuries, malnutrition, pneumonia and other infections.

Mr. Boothe and Ms. Boothe-Rowe had an obligation to care for their ten year old son once he came to Canada. Things changed once the couple had a son of their own. Shakeil’s was treated with abuse and neglect for the last months of his life. Autopsy results showed “injuries on top of injuries” and open wounds on Shakeil’s emaciated body, as well as clear signs of infection in his lungs and blood stream.

At first, Garfield Boothe was charged with failing to provide the necessities of life, that change was later changed to second degree murder. Nichelle Boothe-Rowe was, at first, charged with manslaughter and then that charge was changed to second degree murder. They were both were sentenced to mandatory life sentences.
