Sophia Marie Acosta was born on February 5, 2008 to Obediah Acosta and Erika Smith. Sophia's parents had separated, and Sophia's mother had full custody of Sophia, and her baby sister, Alexa. Little Sophia lived in an apartment she shared with her mother, her mother’s boyfriend, a younger sibling and her baby sitter. Erika and Christopher began using drugs like heroine.

 

On May 7, 2011 Sophia Acosta was found unresponsive, naked, wrapped up and barely breathing. She was taken to Hospital Central California in Madera after suffering major head trauma. Her injuries got the best of her. Sophia died four days later in Children's Hospital in Madera County after being removed from life support. It was discovered that her cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Autopsy results show she was physically abused.

 

About a week later, Christ was arrested. Chris Cheary is accused of sexually abusing Sophia and then severely beating her. Investigators found evidence of drugs inside the couple's apartment. Little Sophia tested positive for marijuana and investigators say the child's mother admitted to smoking it with the suspect the day Sophia was sexually abused and beaten until she only had a faint pulse. Sophia mother Erika Smith was not charged with anything.
