Quasir Alexander
Tanya Williams once lived with her mother, but left because the mother did not approve of her boyfriend, the father of her four youngest children. Williams then went to live with a church friend, but was thrown out after a dispute about religion. Left to roam the streets with her four children, and pregnant with the twins, she slept one night in the lobby of the city's Department of Human Services in search of help. She ended up in a homeless shelter with her four children when she gave birth to twin boys, one of the twins she named Quasir. The twins were sent home on October 25, along with information about food stamps and a car seat program, and advice on their feeding and sleeping needs. In the shelter Williams had access to formula.
On December 23, 2010, a medical crew was called to check on an unresponsive baby. That baby was two month old Quasir. Paramedics found Quasir cold and lifeless on a bed alone, wearing only a diaper. Quasir had no fat or muscle left when he died, Quasir weighed only four pounds, which was less than he weighed than he did at birth. He had nothing in his belly. An autopsy concluded that he died of both starvation and dehydration.
Quasir’s surviving twin brother received hospital care for several days due to malnutrition. Tanya Williams was charged with murder in the death of her son, Quasir Alexander and was sentenced to 9-18 years in prison. Williams was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Quasir and aggravated assault in the case of his twin. Caseworkers are being investigated to see if they too should be held responsible. The one that reportedly saw Quasir in good health and well two days before his death.
