Pandora Autumn Mitchell
Pandora lived with her mother Tasha Lewis and her father Mika Mitchell. On March 3, 2008 on five week old Pandora Mitchell when she was taken to a Skowhegan hospital with a black eye and bruising on her cheeks, buttocks and forehead that resembled fingers. Pandora died three days later when life support was removed.
Mitchell told police that his mother came to visit 30 minutes after she left he was carrying laundry upstairs and he noticed that Pandora was wheezing and choking. Mitchell’s mother said that the visit was normal but she did not go upstairs to check on the baby even though she could hear her. Mitchell was left alone with Pandora for about 15 minutes after his mother left. When Lewis and her family came back for the store Mitchell told her Pandora was has difficulty. Lewis handed Mitchell a cell phone and told him to call for help. She check and Pandora she was limp and her tongue and mouth were swollen.
Baby Pandora was taken from her home by ambulance to a nearby hospital and then by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center where she died. By the time the ambulance arrived Lewis could see bruises on Pandora’s face. Medical experts determined that Pandora no longer had brain activity and life support was discontinued.
Mika Mitchell admitted to shaking and striking his infant daughter Pandora and holding his hand over her face. Mitchell was sentenced to 17 years in prison with all but 14 suspended and 4 years probation. In addition, Mitchell was ordered to have no contact with children under the age of 5 years.
