Kaylen’s father was at work and Ashley Young was the only one home with the Kaylen when her injuries took place. Police went to the home of Ashley Young in response to a 911 call about an injured, unresponsive child. Paramedics found Kaylen unconscious with suspicious marks on her body. Shortly after, Kaylen was life-flighted to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, clinging to life. By that time Kaylen showed no brain activity and her family members made the decision to remove Kaylen from life support.

 

Young claimed Kaylen had suffered some sort of seizure or convulsion. An autopsy determined that Kaylen’s death was the result of blunt force impact to the head. The medical examiner noted additional bruises on her torso and thighs.

Young choked and beat the Kaylen. Investigators found an imprint of Kaylen’s head in the carpet, as well as hair that had been ripped out of her head. Young allegedly tried to hide the shirt Kaylen had worn that day from investigators and attempted to buy illegal drugs before anyone called for help. The person authorities believe she was planning to buy the drugs from was the one who drove her and Kaylen to the hospital.
 

Young pleaded guilty previously pleading innocent by reason of insanity. Young was sentenced to a life in prison with a chance for parole after 20 years.
