Jeida died on October 18, 2014 in a city shelter after being kicked and slammed into a metal bed frame by her stepfather Kelsey Smith. Kimberly Torres, told police that Smith called her and “stated that he ‘f***ed up’ and hit Jeida and that Jeida was not breathing. Smith started beating Jeida for wetting her pants, and then turned his anger on her brother Andrew for trying to help her. The city Medical Examiner’s office found Jeida died from blunt force trauma to the head. Police were called by someone who reported bloodcurdling screams coming from a Brooklyn apartment. They found Jeida Torres unconscious and unresponsive. Jeida was rushed to a hospital in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead. Her brother Andrew was hospitalized in stable condition.

 

Smith tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists following Jeia’s death. Smith was taken into police custody and was hospitalized in stable condition. Smith faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted.
