Despite numerous warning signs, a list of negligence appears to have contributed to the Gabriel's death. Gabriel and his older sisters Krista and Monique had been placed in the care of Doris Trujillo's care by the Adams County Department of Social Services in March 2011. Concerned neighbors first asked for a welfare check in September 2011. During the months before Gabriel's death, his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Trujillo, said she and her family became concerned about Gabriel when she saw photos of him with large bruises. In January, one month before Gabriel died he, appeared malnourished and he had multiple contusions.  Medical professionals could not determine whether the bruises, scrapes and a fracture on his body were caused by accident or a result of abuse. On February 7th Commerce City police officers went to Gabriel's home. When Elizabeth Trujillo called the next day, officers told her that they would not return to the home because everything appeared fine. Things are not always as they appear and that cost Gabriel his young life.

 

Gabriel Trujillo was abused to death by his own grandmother. Four Year old Gabriel was found unconscious on Valentine's Day just hours after his grandmother Doris Becky Trujillo forced him to stand naked in the cold as punishment.  Gabriel’s frail body was covered in bruises and what appeared to be cigarette burns. His body temperature was around 89 degrees.

 

Trujillo told police that Gabriel had fallen off a chair and hit his head. Medical professionals at Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora, where Gabriel was taken, reported that he had "catastrophic head injuries," including "evidence of old cranial bleeding."  Gabriel died four day later from blunt force injuries to the head and neck. Doris Was arrested on February 14th charged with first-degree murder. Becky Trujillo was sentenced to eight years behind bars.
