Austin Davis

Three year old Austin died alone and afraid of dehydration after his mother locked him in a cabin in rural Colorado for more than four days. Meghan McKeon admitted leaving her son Austin Davis alone in a cabin the night before his death. McKeon had a history of leaving Austin alone without food, water or heat. The toxicology results support a "classic" dehydration pattern, the report stated. Austin had no visible external injuries.

McKeon called police to say she found her son lying face up with his eyes open showing no signs of life.  He was pronounced dead a couple of hours later at Yampa Valley Medical Center. Doctors initially believed he may have ingested something poisonous. But what Meghan McKeon did not tell them at the time was that she left her three year old son alone in the cabin with no heat and no running water for more than four days. During that time, the mother went to work and then stayed at a boyfriend’s house. When Austin Davis died, Meghan McKeon had left him with only a movie playing.

McKeon was arrested and initially pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of child abuse however, those charges, which would have only carried a maximum sentence of 42 months if convicted, were then sensationally dropped. In a dramatic twist, the District Attorney now intended to charge her with the more serious crime of child abuse resulting in death.

Update:

McKeon, was sentenced to 22 years in prison after entering a guilty plea to one count of fatal child abuse.
