On April 14 Devell Johnson was watching two year old Armaney while her mother Brittany Cotton was at work as he had several times previously. Johnson carried unconscious Armaney upstairs and told his step-father and mother that the child was unresponsive. The step-father told Johnson to wait upstairs while he called an ambulance. An ambulance was dispatched to the home at 4:28 p.m. and Armaney was declared dead at 4:42 p.m. at St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Centers. She was brought to the hospital with bruises, scratches and bite marks. Her mother Brittany Cotton said it appeared "somebody tortured my child."

 

 An autopsy showed bruising on Armaney’s face and head and a bite mark on her lower back. The report also found that Armaney suffered extensive internal bleeding, multiple lacerations to her liver, bleeding to her right kidney and a subdural hematoma. Armaney's death was caused by multiple injuries from a beating. It also identified the bite marks on her skin as human. Devell was charged with first degree murder. Devell faces life in prison. He has a list of priors including possession of a handgun, possession of a blackjack and a pending case for the unlawful use of a weaponcharge.
