Anays Chanel Carimbocas

Crystal Carimbocas arrived home from work around midnight and called 911 nearly an hour and a half after finding Anays ifeless lying on the bathroom sink having difficulty breathing. Dominguez told police he noticed she was struggling to breathe earlier in the evening and administered "rescue breaths" but did not call 911. Anays was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. Dominguez had tried to explain to the police that her immediate injuries occurred at the apartment complex's community pool that day. He said she fell. The injuries were the result, of course, of more than a single fall. Also, the pool had not been open that day and surveillance tapes did not show the family at the pool.

May 14, 2011 wasn't the first time police were called to Carimbocas' home, which she had been sharing with Gonzalez-Dominguez for about a year. In July 2010 Mesa police got a call from Carimbocas' mother, who told them Anays' six year old sister had been punched in the face by Gonzalez Dominguez. The girl's mother, however as well as the girl's siblings, at the direction of their mother told police the bruise on the child's face happened when another one of Carimbocas' kids threw a toy at her face. In September, police were again called to the couple's home, this time, because Anays had a black eye, a broken blood vessel in her left ear, and a hematoma on her scalp. The girl's mother, Gonzalez-Dominguez, and the girl's siblings told police the injury happened when she fell into a table while playing with one of her sisters. A doctor examined the girl and determined that the injuries were "quite severe for falling into a table, but it could have happened."

An autopsy determined that Anays died from blunt-force trauma. A medical examiner found skull fractures,14 broken ribs that were calcified and healing, as well as a broken pelvis that was also healing. The autopsy doctor determined those injuries did not occur during the fatal beating that ended Anays' life. Carimbocas was arrested for not reporting what authorities determined was about a year of abuse. Gonzalez-Dominguez was charged with 1st degree murder and 5 counts of child abuse. Crystal was also found guilty of first degree murder. Carimbocas was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of release after serving 35 years. Carimbocas was also sentenced to terms of 28 years and 13 years on two child abuse convictions. Those sentences will run back to back with each other and the life term.
